McConnell’s Condition and Recovery
U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was released from the hospital on Monday and sent to a rehabilitation facility, after suffering a concussion last Wednesday night following a fall at a dinner. McConnell’s Communications Director David Popp said in a statement that “Leader McConnell’s concussion recovery is proceeding well and the Leader was discharged from the hospital today.” He added that McConnell will undergo a period of physical therapy before returning home.
Additional Injuries
During the course of treatment, McConnell’s doctors discovered that he also suffered a minor rib fracture on Wednesday night, for which he is also being treated. It is unknown when the 81-year-old senator, who is the longest-serving Senate Republican leader in history, will return to the Senate.
Length of Time in Rehab
A Senate aide said McConnell’s doctors will decide the duration of his stay at the rehabilitation facility. However, one to two weeks is the estimated standard post-hospitalization stay, as reported by the Washington Post.
Communication and Senate Roster
Although McConnell is receiving treatment, he has been in touch with Senate colleagues by text and has had meetings with Senate staff members and other advisers at the hospital, as mentioned in a report by the New York Times. Meanwhile, the Democrats have a slim 51-49 majority in the U.S. Senate, and have recently relied on Vice President Kamala Harris to cast tie-breaking votes on some judicial nominations due to the absence of some Democrats. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Penn.) is working remotely during treatment for depression and is unable to cast a vote because he is not physically present. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is also out, after being hospitalized with shingles.
McConnell’s Previous Injuries and Health Issues
McConnell was previously injured in 2019, having surgery after fracturing his shoulder on a patio at his home in Louisville, as reported by the Post. He also has a history of heart issues and had triple bypass surgery in 2003.
