The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly condemned the Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government for erecting walls around key business hubs in Ilorin, describing the move as an act of “economic sabotage” and “despotic recklessness.”
In a statement signed by the party’s State Chairman, Rt. Hon. Babatunde Mohammed, the PDP criticized the closure of areas such as Challenge, Unity, and Post Office—some of the largest business hubs in the metropolis. The party noted that these walls have not only disrupted livelihoods but have also exacerbated the economic challenges faced by small-scale business owners and enterprising youth.
“The erection of these thoughtless fences, which has effectively shut down access to small-scale businesses, demonstrates a complete lack of empathy and consideration for the devastating impact this will have on business owners, their families, and the local economy by the current administration,” the statement read.
The PDP expressed sympathy with affected business owners and entrepreneurs, acknowledging the years of effort and investment many have put into their enterprises. The party accused the Abdulrazaq administration of undermining the livelihoods of Kwarans and stifling economic growth.
“Denying people access to their places of livelihood is not only callous but also an act of despotic recklessness. It is particularly shocking and deeply unfortunate that Governor Abdulrazaq ignored the years of hard work, personal sacrifices, and loans invested by these business owners before embarking on such a reckless, anti-people policy,” Mohammed stated.
The statement also called on security agencies to act responsibly and ensure the safety of protesting youth entrepreneurs. The PDP warned that failure to address the issue could lead to increased social unrest, as many young people are left without means of livelihood.
” We call on security agencies to rise above the governor’s recklessness and ensure the safety and rights of the protesting youth entrepreneurs. They must act responsibly and advise the governor that this action, if unchecked, could further escalate violence and criminal activities in Ilorin metropolis as hundreds of young people lose their means of livelihood,” the statement further read.
The party urged the protesting entrepreneurs to remain peaceful and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. Assuring residents of hope for the future, the PDP pledged to dismantle the walls and restore access to business areas if elected in 2027.
“If elected in 2027, a PDP-led government will prioritize the immediate removal of all these oppressive walls, restoring access and opportunities for businesses to thrive,” the statement promised.
The PDP concluded by calling on all Kwarans to work towards the return of “responsible governance” in 2027, stating, “We call on all well-meaning Kwarans to join hands with us to ensure the return of responsible governance in 2027.”
This development has sparked significant agitation among business owners and the public, with many expressing concerns over the adverse economic impact of the decision.
